NOAA WEATHER RADIO

NOAA Weather Radio (NWR) is a nationwide network of radio stations broadcasting continuous weather information direct from a nearby National Weather Service office. NWR broadcasts National Weather Service warnings, watches, forecasts and other hazard information 24 hours a day.

Working with the Federal Communication Commission's (FCC) Emergency Alert System, NWR is an "all hazards" radio network, making it your single source for comprehensive weather and emergency information. NWR also broadcasts warning and post-event information for all types of hazards--both natural (such as earthquakes and volcano activity) and environmental (such as chemical releases or oil spills).

In Butler County, the two frequencies covering our area are 162.450 MHz out of Columbus and 162.475 MHz out of Lincoln.  For most of the county, the Columbus repeater is the best.  But in the SE part of the county, compare it to the Lincoln repeater for the best possible signal.

There are some weather radios that offer SAME technology.  What this does for you is that your radio will only go off if Butler County is going to be affected.  For example, without SAME technology, your radio could tone out for a Tornado Warning in Gage county since it is in the same region as Butler.  This could mean a lot of tone outs without even being in danger of the storm.  Another advantage to the SAME technology, is that the radio has indicators of the type of watch or warning you are in.  That means if you miss the initial broadcast of the warning, a simple look at the radio will tell you the hazard and level.

Again, here is the info you need for Butler County.

Butler Counties SAME (FIPS) code is 31023 Some weather
radios require a zero before the SAME code.  For example Butler would be 031023

If you don't own a radio, or want a newer model with SAME, check the local businesses in the county.  Many of them carry weather radios.  If you can't find what you are looking for, Radio Shack and many online companies carry them as well.  Typing "NOAA weather radio" into Yahoo, Google or any other search engine will yield many places selling these radios.

Radio Shack has many models to choose from.  Look for models with SAME technology
